Miniature painters have access to thousands of paints from an increasingly diverse range of manufacturers. Comparing those paints accurately, however, can be surprisingly difficult. 

Paint names are subjective. Manufacturer colour charts are not directly comparable. Photographs are affected by lighting, cameras and screens. Two paints described in similar terms may be quite different, while paints sold under completely different names may be remarkably close. 

The Chroma Institute was established to approach this problem differently: by starting with the physical paint itself.

Through instrumental measurement and consistent analysis, we can compare paints from different manufacturers on the same basis and turn those measurements into useful information for painters.

The Chroma Institute was founded by Dr David Sinclair, a researcher, software developer and miniature painter with more than 15 years' experience in academic research and data-driven research methods. 

His professional work has included scientific research, data analysis, software development and the design of research methods and workflows. The Chroma Institute grew from an interest in applying those approaches to a practical problem familiar to miniature painters: how to compare colours objectively across different manufacturers and paint ranges. 

He leads the development of the Institute's colour measurement and analysis methodology, its paint dataset and Paint Lab.
